 Tate Liverpool

Alice in Wonderland ...... I have been looking forward to seeing this exhibtion for a while, and thought I would visit it this week to gain that last bit of inspiration!! Unforunatly photographs were forbidden.. I managed to sneak a few!  I particulary liked the set of 12 illustrations Dali created for Alice's adventures,  his use of colour related to my work well and encouraged some ideas I have for large scale prints to compliment my work. His famous 'melting clock' appears in several images expressing the relativity of time, Alice is also seen 'skipping away' from what he described as the 'crutches of time' ; two ideas that relate significantly to last weeks CP lecture!

Digital Print Development...

I am really enjoying the digital print workshop, after using photoshop frequently last year I have developed my knowledge, manipulating several drawings and paintings with the use of different tools and techniques ...

Drawing Session ( Monday 7th Nov)

My metre by metre drawing .......

                                                            (Watercolour, compressed charcoal)

In the next drawing session, we were given a selection of phrases, and were told to choose either one or two, in order to aid us in 'deconstructing'  our drawings. I chose the phrases   'to embellish' and 'to perforate',  my ongoing progess is documented below .....

Contextualising Practice

Week beginning mon 7th Nov, we discussed the 'uses of time' in relation to design.   Below are examples of concepts and artists' work  that I found interesting and continued to consider after the lecture .....

Caroline Broadhead - Uses light and shadow to measure time. Her work was based on the concept of 'another time', she was aware of the intusive presence of a ghost , and created a dress attached to the circumference of a room, therefore immediatly imposing presense, on a presense that already exists.

( I really like this idea as it deals with a concept of time that not everybody has faith in,
the idea that the ghost may disturb the fabric, is a complex yet exciting concept to
                                        understand.)

Gijs Bakker - Created 'Peepshow Wallpaper' , wallapaper with cut out circles that can be put directly on top of existing wall decoration. The wallpaper creates windows to look back on past memories: a way of 'relaying the past'.

                                                                                             (gijsbakker.com)

I also found challanging the idea relayed by Jckson Pollock, he referes to dreaming as 'non time', exploring the idea that in a piece of time you can create the concept of past and present, suggeting that sometimg that happeneed in the past, but can be seen creativly in the present. I found this a complicated idea to comprehend , however find it quite inspiring.

Germaine Koh Knitwork is a life-long piece made by the unravelling of used garments and reknitting the yarn into a single continuously growing object. As it records the ongoing passage of time and effort, the work becomes a monument to the very artifacts that comprise it. This is again a unlikely concept, where is she going to store such a large scale piece? What will happen to it when she dies? ......

                      Sketchbook Reflection

After analysing several sketchbooks in the session (Thurs 3rd Nov) I now feel I can evaluate my own work to date, in order to reflect on my progress so far and can highlight areas that I feel need further development.  When reflecting on the comments made by my peers, I agree there are aspects of my work that have proved successful, however from seeing the work of others believe there are also areas that need improvement.
I see the initial drawings in relation to my primary research as being a vital in providing me with a basis to begin my development.  After immediately visiting my chosen starting point, I collected a range of photographs of the aspects of Canal Street that initially interested me.  From here, I began drawing from these images, as well as drawing on the street itself, focusing primarily on colour, form and texture.  This provided me with a range of visual elements that I could develop, or discard accordingly.
Throughout my project, I continue to juxtapose the use of harsh bold prints, with a soft use of watercolour, including work that has great detail and pieces that are relatively loose. I see my use of colour as a positive aspect of my work that I continue to use throughout when considering all of my ideas.  This evolved as a theme within my project, as colour proved a significant feature when considering the social connections related to the transvestites at Canal Street. As a result, I chose to study different fabrics found when searching about this idea and produced larger scale studies of these in gouache and watercolour.  I think my methodology is quite formal with my ideas progressing clearly. I begin by focusing on an image or idea related to my starting point, I explore the ways I can interpret this idea with a range of materials and media, developing the more successful outcomes in different ways on a larger scale.  Contextually I visited several exhibitions that informed my starting point, each, along with the Contextualising Practice Lectures,  inspired me to challenge the way I worked, attempting to evolve diverse ways of working.  From looking at other sketchbooks, I believe I could improve my working method by including, and relating my workshop samples to my sketchbook work.  I have now begun to do this and hope my knit work will enhance and compliment my drawings.  I also hope to discover the work of more significant artists, to gain more inspiration before the end of the project.
I believe my project has been effective to date, and hope to continue developing further ideas in relation to my second workshop before the end of the project.  In order to improve my work I will adapt my way of working considering the aforementioned points, including all on going workshop samples.

Monday 31 October 2011

Beginning to think about influences related to recent drawing tasks, and how to develop different
mark making techniques, considering the ideas of shadow, negative space and line.
Recently visited the Whitworth Gallery, and explored the 'Dark Matters' exhibition. Several
pieces engage with darkness and shadow through a range of technologies.  I was especially
drawn to how the artists involved explore different themes within each piece, and found  korean artist Ja - Young
Ku's use of projection to create such ideas, fascinating.

I also liked this 'acid print', 'Nude' , it again plays with the idea of creating shadows,
and appears to have been created from a 'blast of energy'.  The print itself reminds me of some of
my previous acrylic prints I created previously of transvestites . . . . . .

Some examples of the use of 'negative space' I came across whilst general researching;
I find this concept difficult to put into practice, and hope  to develop this technique . . .

Greyson Perry, transvestite artist,  uses ceramics and other art forms to make concealed
comments about social injustices and hypocrisies and to explore historical and contemporary
                              themes.

I have focused on the fabrics contained in Perry's ceramics, painting up close
studies in watercolour, and exploring images taken from his work, through the use
                                                                             of printing techniques and embroidery.

I chose Canal Street as my starting point for the Sleuths, Spies and Lies project. I began by visiting
the street, and collected photographs of the aspects that initially appealed to me.

To develop my initial research I began to explore the images I had collected through the use
of  painting and drawing using a variety of media and mark making.
